Call of the Wild
By: PrincessVal
Is there a place I can call home? A place for me, a place for my heart? In my brain I must work... day and night. Night and day. But in my heart I am free, free on the open range....
I am Goldenfire, or I was. I was born into a herd of wild horses, and three days afterwards everyone was killed, except for me and the rest of the foals. I was taken here, trained, and I had to work every day, normally walking around a ring, pulling a chain, to keep all the humans' mechanics working. It kills my heart. I sweat constantly. My legs ache. I can hardly breathe. And so, I attempted to escape, but I was recaptured just as I passed the gaurds, and I was whipped until the right side of my rump had hardly an hair, but instead red, burning, aching skin. I am now chained up outside, between two posts, that hardly give me any room at all to breathe. My head is pushing against a post in front of me, and my hooves are digging into the muddy ground. Is there any way to escape this horror?
"Hey, boy, how ya doin'?"
Finally, I thought, restlessly,
James is here. He'll take care of me. James was a young stable boy who loved me dearly. He was the only one who cared for me. "Let me see if I can get this creme onto your wound. Don't squeal, though, `cause it may hurt..." as James applied the creme, I held back a desperate cry of pain.
It hurts! I whinnied quietly. "There ya go, perdy boy," James lifted his hand, which, had blood spread all over it. "But I may need to get quite a few band-aids to take care of that blood. If you lose too much, you may die."
Oh, James, I thought,
why do you neglect yourself and instead care for me? James was such a kind boy. He let his clotches shribble, and cared for me instead of patching the holes and making new clothing.
